Abstract

This article contains field research on the experiences of liturgists in involving their bodies through communal and personal body gestures in the liturgy, the meaning of these gestures, and understanding of the body through movements carried out in one of the GPIB churches in Depok. The research used a descriptive-qualitative method with observation instruments at three weekly worship schedules for one month and semi-structured interviews with liturgical practitioners encountered throughout the observation. The interview focused on three themes: the liturgist's interpretation of communal bodily gestures, the liturgist's experience of personal gestures and the meaning attached to these gestures, and the liturgist's understanding of the body, which is born from the experience of liturgy. The results of this research show the types of bodily involvement in the GPIB liturgy, both in the form of communal and personal gestures, as well as their meaning, the significance of the application of physical gestures in worship and a picture, in a limited way, of how members of the GPIB congregation understand the body. It is hoped that the results of this research will ultimately be a consideration for Calvinist churches to start giving more significant space to applying bodily gestures, especially personal gestures, as a form of liturgical language.
