Abstract

This article interprets the story of Naboth in 1 Kings 21 through the perspective of redaction history within the socio-historical context of Hellenism. Naboth’s refusal to surrender his ancestral land is understood not merely as an agrarian issue but as a symbol of resistance against the Hellenization program that sought to homogenize the cultural and religious identity of the Jewish people at that time. Thus, the text functions as a discourse of resistance against uniformity that sacrifices plurality. Its relevance to the Indonesian context is highly significant, as the nation continues to face challenges of religious intolerance, cultural homogenization, and identity politics that undermine the principle of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Through the story of Naboth, this article emphasizes the importance of preserving plurality as a national strength, rejecting all forms of enforced uniformity, and highlighting the prophetic role of faith communities in nurturing diversity.
