A critical examination of artificial intelligence applications in church ministry task performance
Abstract
Artificial intelligence extends beyond its origins in computer science, now permeating nearly all aspects of daily life, including religious services. This study analyzes the ways in which church ministers utilize artificial intelligence in their duties and examines its impact on congregations. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research incorporates interviews with several church ministers and a literature review spanning theological and information technology sources. The findings reveal three key points. First, church ministers employ artificial intelligence primarily for preaching and liturgical services, utilizing online interpretation applications, search engines, and digital displays of song and sermon texts. Second, the integration of artificial intelligence has positive effects, such as broadening ministers' knowledge, enhancing congregational motivation to attend services, and streamlining service preparation. Third, certain boundaries remain: preacher robots, machine-generated blessings, and sacramental services conducted by artificial entities cannot substitute for ministers who are called, ordained, and equipped by God. In conclusion, artificial intelligence serves as a valuable tool to support ministry, provided it does not conflict with the fundamental calling of church ministers.
