Abstract
In Bowen Family Systems Theory, emotional cutoff describes managing unresolved attachment to the family of origin through distance or severance. However, research on estrangement between parents and adult children shows that distance, though sometimes reactive, may protect against abuse, boundary violations, or identity rejection. This integrative-critical review of Bowen theory, estrangement and family communication research, intergenerational studies, and Christian counseling on forgiveness identifies three problems. First, relational form does not adequately explain emotional function. Second, differentiation of self is best assessed through anxiety regulation, self-positioning, reflection on one's systemic contribution, and boundary-setting rather than contact frequency. Third, reconciliation-oriented theology becomes problematic when forgiveness is treated as an obligation to restore relational access without safety, accountability, and reciprocity. The study proposes a heuristic category, "differentiated protective distance," and four clinical tests: distance function, affect organization, safety accountability, and reciprocity. It thereby distinguishes emotional cutoff from estrangement as a social form and grounds Christian relational counseling oriented toward healing without enforced reconciliation.
